Motivational Interviewing and Behavioural Change Training

Motivational Interviewing (MI),developed by W. Miller and S. Rollnick, is a respectful, compassionate and evidence-based style of consultation, a necessary skill base for delivering a true Personalised Care approach to care.

MI is person-centred, offering the ‘tools’ and a framework so you may support and guide people strengthen their inherent motivation to change.  It uses individual’s own goals and action to increase their motivation by exploring their doubts and barriers to change. MI respects people’s autonomy, provoking their desire to change by taking a collaborative, not confrontational, approach.

MI considers the COM-B model of behavioural change, created by Michie et al. 2011 and the Stages of Change model created by Prochaska, Norcross and DiClemente. Models that assists the health care professional and individual to recognise where the person is in terms of their Capability, Opportunity and Motivation towards change.

Aims of the training:

  1. Understand why some people are more difficult to support, work with, than others
  2. Have a basic understanding of the theory of MI and its application with different individuals
  3. Have a basic understanding of the skills necessary to practically apply MI with people considering their stage of behaviour change.
  4. Acknowledge the necessity of building an individual’s confidence and resolving ambivalence.
  5. Able to practice and demonstrate the competencies necessary to achieve a positive consultation:
  • The use of Open Discovery Questions (ODQ) to assess and explore
  • Use of Reflection and Affirmation to build a supportive consultation
  • Active listening
  • Support understanding and goal setting


This training session is limited to 8 to support a more personalised approach, to allow attendees feel more at ease and comfortable when participating in discussions and other interactivity.
